S JANAKI BIDS ADIEU TO SINGING

enowned playback singer of south India S Janaki has announced her retirement from singing. She has chosen a Malayalam song from the film 10 Kalpanakal to be her swansong.

S Janaki, who is known as Nightingale of South India has selected a lullaby song from the Malayalam film to be her final song. She has also made it clear that she will not be recording anymore nor will she sing at any functions.

S Janaki, 78, said she is old and that has sung in many languages. She said she would like to rest, relax and leave her career behind.

The legendary singer, who refused the Padma Bhushan in 2013 saying that it had come too late, has recorded around 48,000 songs in her career and has won national awards and 32 state film awards in languages including Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Oriya. Janaki started as a playback singer in Tamil movie Vidhiyin Vilayattu in 1957  and has lent her mellifluous voice to many hits in south Indian films for close to six decades.

S Janaki said she was contemplating on calling it quits and the lullaby song is close to her heart to choose it as her final song.
